I am working with Starfish International, located in Lamin, The Gambia. Starfish's mission is to educate Gambian girls so that they can live healthy, productive, successful lives.
This year I am planning to return to work on a community assessment of Lamin, mapping out their resources and helping them know their community more intimately. More news to come!
Last year I worked on a very special project using Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed to help the girls discuss issues within their community.
I have a chapter in this book, Gender Oppression and Globalization, written with my colleague Edward J. Alessi, addressing what social workers need to know about human trafficking in order to identify and assist people who may be caught up in this incredibly unjust situation.
I am very proud of this chapter because it marries the academic with the practical, and attempts to help social workers identify and assist trafficked people who might otherwise slip through our care and continue to suffer horrendous abuse. Here is a quick video of the chapter’s contents.
The book can be ordered from CSWE Press.
